Darby Costello was transported on the Surrey Or Surry, departing 14th Jul 1816 and arriving 20th Dec 1816 with 150 passengers.
Built at Harwich in 1811 a square-rigged transport ship of 443 tons and copper lined she had two decks with a height between decks of 5 ft. 8 ins. In 1818, she had a major refit increasing the decks (and convict carrying capacity) to three. She was owned by the London firm of F. & C.F. Mangles.

1828 Census Index. Darby Costello, age 40, T.L. Surry, 1816, Life, catholic, farmer, Wilberforce district. Has 30 acres, all cleared and cultivated. Has 9 cattle. Helen Costello, age 35, C.F. Thames, 1826, catholic. Catherine, age 16, came free in 1826 on ship Thames; Patrick, 14, came free in 1826 on ship Thames; Mary, 13, born in colony, Helen jun. 1 ½.

Darby was 35 years old on arrival and his occupation was a “Horseshoer/Blacksmith. His native place was Kerry County. No crime given. Colonial Secretary: COSTELLO, Derby. Per "Surrey", 1816 1824 Apr 10: On list of prisoners on establishment at Bathurst with sentences not transmitted (Reel 6028; 2/8283 p.100) 1824 Jul 29: Re his request for free passage for his family (Reel 6013; 4/3512 p.111) 1825 Nov: To be granted a conditional pardon (Fiche 3292; 4/6974.1 pp.48, 72) Darby's wife Helen and children Catherine, Patrick and Mary emigrated on the "Thames" in 1826 to join Darby. 1825: TOL Bathurst – gives his birth date as 1785. 1832: TOL Penrith 21/11/1835: CP 5/2/1852: Darby died at Windsor.
