Spouse: Mary Bosworth alias Mary Cotton, she arrived per Providence 1822. Both he and Thomas Acton were convicted of house stealing in Sydney in 1820 and sentenced to transportation to Newcastle. Both transported to Newcastle per Princess Charlotte and both wives wrote to the colonial secretary asking to be allowed to join their husbands in Newcastle.

Surname also recorded as Cotton, Cottan and Cotan. Death recorded as 'Cotan' (reg: 75/1846 V18467531B. Associated with Thomas Acton alias Joseph Ogle and Sarah Acton alias Mary Ogle.
