Sentence for stealing from his employer and then setting his employer's house on fire. Co accused was Henrietta Sharpe, who Cotton had married six months earlier, despite being married already to Sarah nee Earles. Henrietta was acquitted and Cotton transported to Geelong. His wife, Sarah, wrote to Charles La Trobe in 1849 asking after him. La Trobe wrote back to her on 9 Jan 1850 advising that Cotton had married Jane Sheridan in Geelong in 1848 and was working in Geelong. Cotton was a serial bigamist, marrying Margaret Connors in 1851 and Harriett Follett in 1860.

Copy of letter from Charles La Trobe to Sarah Cotton, Hill St, Walworth, London, dated 9 Jan 1950 responding to her letter of 22 August 1849, advises Edward Cotton married Jane Shreridan at Geelong on 30 Oct 1848 and that Cotton was working in Geelong.
