Mary Cox was indicted for stabbing one Michael Leary, at the Paterson, on the 14th November, with intent to kill and murder him; a second count charged her with cutting and maiming with intent to do him some grevious bodily harm. The Jury found the prisoner guilty on the second count. Sentenced to five years to the third class of the Female Factory ; the three first days in every month to be in solitary confinement. Free Press, 13 Feb 1841. This prompted a letter to the newspaper, an extract of which is below: ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE. THE SOLITARY CELLS. MR. EDITOR- I read in the Chronicle of Thursday that his Honor Mr. Justice Stephens sentenced a woman named Mary Cox, alias Mary Alcroft, to five years' confinement in the female factory. So far, I think, that no objection can be made, for it would be well that most of the female prisoners were confined in the factory even for life. HIS Honor thought proper to add to the sentence that she should spend three days out of every week for the first year in solitary confinement, that is, of course, in the cells. … Australasian Chronicle, 16 Feb 1841.
