"HIGHWAY ROBBERY—On Wednesday last at the Ripon Court House, three men who gave their names as James Cayles [sic] of Darlington labourer, John Dawson of York labourer, and James Bryan of York hawker, were committed for trial at the next Assizes on the charge of having on the night of Saturday the 26th of March, near the old church about a quarter of a mile from Pateley Bridge, robbed Mr. John Burrill farmer of Dallowgill of £ll 8s." (Leeds Intelligencer, England, 9/4/1853) "THE CROWN CALENDAR For the Yorkshire Summer Assizes to be opened this day at York ... 9, 10 and 11. JOHN COYLE, 20, JOHN DAWSON, 19, and JAMES BRYAN, 18, charged with assaulting and robbing John Burrill, at High and Low Bishopside; also with assaulting and robbing George Metcalfe, at Masham ... 16. JOHN WATSON otherwise SANDY, 21, charged along with nos 9, 10 and 11." (Yorkshire Gazette, England, 9/7/1853) "The prosecutor is a farmer living at Dallowgill near Pateley Bridge. The 26th of March last was the fair at Pateley Bridge and Mr [John] Burrill attended it. After transacting his business he went to the George Inn, where he remained till after eleven o'clock at night, when he set out on foot homeward. On getting a quarter of a mile on the road, he was seized from behind by a man, who placed his hand over his mouth. Three other men then joined him and the prosecutor was thrown down and beaten. He begged of them to spare his life and called out "Murder". They, however, persisted in their ill-treatment and ultimately the ruffians succeeded in robbing him of all his money. They then returned towards Pateley Bridge and were met by Mr Thorpe, farmer of Bishopside, and wife both of whom spoke to the men, they having seen them just before at the George Inn. They afterwards met the prosecutor with his face covered in blood, and he told them that he had been robbed and nearly killed. The landlord of the George Inn and his wife also spoke to the prisoners having been at their house, and that they left immediately after Mr Burrill. The prisoners were found Guilty and they were sentenced to be Transported for Life, there being another similar charge against them." (Leeds Times, England, 16/7/1853)
