David Craig succeeded in escaping from New South Wales, and he tells how in his Tasmanian Conduct record. He managed to return to Edinburgh, but was again tried and sentenced to Transportation for being at large before the expiry of his sentence of Transportation. High Court of Justiciary. —David Craig, for returning from transportation, was sentenced to transportation for life, the Lord Justice Clerk intimating to him that in all probability he would be sent to Bermuda. The charge is a capital one, but the libel was restricted the Lord Advocate, and, upon this being done, the prisoner snapped his fingers repeatedly, and told his counsel who spoke to him, that he would get back to his own country again. Convicted for Life & made his escape from NSW. Hulk Report, very orderly. Stated, I was tried in Edinburgh before for robbing a barrier bail, and was again sent out. My first offence, Housebreaking, - once one month for robbing, - Relations in Edinburgh, I went to New South Wales in the minstrel in 1825, sentenced for Life. I went to South America in the Alexander, an American ship. David Craig, alias Temple, and Henry Thomson, alias Parkerson, have been sent up by this Ship, on suspicion of being runaways from N. S. Wales. A man named William Bucknell, sentenced to transportation to Norfolk Island, has also been forwarded to his destination by this conveyance. The Tasmanian, 15 Aug 1828. … On the same day (Wednesday) David Craig was fully committed for trial, on a charge of various thefts in the house of Mr. Gooch, at Brighton. David Craig is also to be tried for house-breaking and theft. Caledonian Mercury, 13 Nov 1824. Monday, Nov. 22. The Court having met, David Craig was placed at the Bar, charged with breaking into the house of Christian Gordon, situated at the Dean, near this city, on the 16th day of June, and stealing therefrom a silver watch, a variety of articles of wearing apparel, and 7s. 6d. in silver, the property of Thomas Duncan ; he also stood charged with being habit and repute common thief, to all of which he pleaded Guilty. The Lord Advocate restricted the libel to an arbitrary punishment. Lord Hermand proposed that the prisoner should be transported for life, in which the rest of their Lordships agreeing, sentence was passed accordingly, after a suitable admonition from the Lord Justice Clerk, which seemed not to make the slightest impression on the prisoner. a young man, and wright trade. John McGinnis per ship Almorah 2, Redmond Moss, per Globe, Friday Angel, per Adamant, Lawrence Cary, per Mangles 3, William or Charles Lovell, per Shipley 4, David Craig, per Minstrel, 2, Charles Daley, per Chapman, William O’Neill, per Lady Castlereagh. Charged with secretly absenting themselves from Barracks on the night of Tuesday the fourth of January 1831; for entering a dwelling Hut and putting in bodily fear John Holyland, per ship Henry 1, John Cahill, per ship Guildford 3, Matthias Muller per ship Indian; for robbing the Tool house at Longridge of a blue jacket and a number of Pitchforks and reaping hooks to arm themselves and their associates for the purpose of attacking the Garrison; for Mutinous conduct in conspiring to destroy the Garrison by setting fire to the soldiers’ huts and stockage, and to murder the Detachment; and also for conspiring to murder John Grower, per ship Anne 2, and Abraham Davis, per ship Earl St Vincent, 4, and for cutting and maiming them with intent to do them some grievous bodily harm.
