Convict Notes

Mary Crane was given in charge for the murder of a female child by strangulation and leaving her to be starved. After a short discussion between the Court and Mr. Bennett, upon the question of identity, and it being announced by Counsel for the prisoner that they would not call any witnesses, the case was sent to the Jury—who returned a verdict of—Not Guilty of Murder, but Guilty of Manslaughter. Baron Foster addressed the unhappy woman in very impressive terms, stating to her that she was indebted to the distinctions of the law in critical cases such as the present, for her escape from an ignominious exit from this world. He should, however, pass upon her the extreme penalty of the law in cases of manslaughter. The sentence of the Court was, that she should be transported for life. Limerick Chronicle, 29 March 1834. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Mary Crane was found Guilty of the manslaughter of her female child, and sentenced transportation for life. Northern Whig, 3 Apr 1834.
