May 21 1824. On list of prisoners assigned. Samuel Cranstone, per Martha, Assigned 21 May 1824 to George Panton, Sydney. Letter dated June 17 1825. Dulwich Grove, Hunters River. Newcastle Sir, I beg leave to inform you that the bearer Samuel Cranstone was sent to me from Sydney in January last being then within a few months of becoming free. I was obliged to go to Sydney the first week of March, at which time I believe he ought to have gone for his Certificate but as I had no other man that could plough, I prevailed upon him to remain on the farm till my return when I hoped to be able to bring another ploughman. Men were so scarce that I could not get any and therefore when I returned to my farm I found that I should not be able to get any wheat in if Cranstone left me, so I kept him ….
