The “Caledonian Mercury” of Thursday the 8th March 1849 reports on the sentence handed down : “High Court of Justiciary : The Court met on Monday – present the Lord Justice Clerk, Lord Medwyn, and Lord Cockburn. Peter Cranston and William Green were placed at the bar accused of theft by housebreaking, aggravated by being habit and repute, and also previously convicted of theft, in so far as, on the 27th January last, they broke into a barn at Slateford, occupied by James Geddes, grocer, and stole therefrom several sacks or bags; also with having, on the same night, stolen from the farm-steading of Gray’s Mill, possessed by Mr Matthew Cochrane, 41 hens, the property of the said Matthew Cochrane. The prisoners pleaded guilty, and were sentenced – Cranston to ten years’ transportation, and Green to twelve month’s imprisonment.” Peter Cranston is recorded in Court records as aged 40 “of no fixed abode” and unmarried ; William Green Jnr as aged 17, of Anchor Close, High Street, Edinburgh living with his father; and William Torrance, alias John Robertson, of West Port Edinburgh aged 21 (accessory to the crime?)

I think the name should be Peter Cranston, not Peters Cranston? It is recorded in two sets of records as Peter, including Court records.
