Family connections for Thomas (Creghan) are: small amendments made June 2025 CREGHAN Thomas (Creghan/Crahan) was born about 1766/9 & became a landlord. He was tried for highway robbery at Dublin city Ireland in December 1791, sentenced to 7years & arrived in NSW on 7 8 1793 after a voyage of 6months on BODDINGTONS; he was CofE by religion. He was sent to Norfolk Island in 1796. He was Free by Servitude by 1802. He was recorded as off stores settler/landowner with 15acres land on Norfolk Island in February 1805. He seems to have accommodated Elizabeth (Curtin/Williams/Crowder NILE 1801) & her children in 1806/7. He had a relationship with Mary (Monks) whom he later married on Norfolk Island, perhaps in 1807 (although not shown in Smees records-Smees records do show a Frances (Monks) married John (Murray) in 1807). He had 33acres on Norfolk Island. He, Thomas (Crahand), had 15acres when he left Norfolk Island with his family (& with Elizabeth (Williams & her children) on 26 12 1807 on HMS PORPOISE (as part of the first evacuation (for which volunteers apparantly had been called with appropriate compensation offerred & for which he may have tried to decline as some successful farmers were asked to stay) to Derwent Tasmania arriving on 17 1 1808; then to grant of 33acres at New Norfolk Derwent Valley. He & his sons became notorious as plunderers, habitual sheep stealers in association with bushrangers & a robber named (Watts). In September 1817 he was accused with son Thomas & 2others for stealing sheep of Mr (Wade), sent to Port Jackson/Sydney on PILOT for trial where they were sentenced to death commuted to hard labour for Life. On 20 11 1817 he was sent to Newcastle as prisoner on ELIZABETH HENRIETTA. In 1819 he was selected to help find government boat CORSER with runaway convicts wrecked 500miles north-on HMS LADY NELSON. He next lived in Sydney where he was issued his Ticket of Leave no.408/2007. He returned to Van Diemens Land (Tasmania) in 1820 as Thomas (Croughan) on PRINCESS CHARLOTTE & rejoined his family. In January 1828 he had to prove he had a Ticket of Leave, which was achieved, but not clearly enough. through the efforts of Police Magistrate John (Burnett). He was taken to Hobart Town on 22 5 1828 as the Ticket of Leave issue was not satisfactorily proved & imprisoned; he petitioned with support from fellow settlers resulting in being sent to New Norfolk for a few weeks, then to Sydney on MERMAID for the matter to be resolved. He returned to New Norfolk where he sold the 33acres & equipment to George (Stokell) builder of Hobart Town for 250lb on 22 7 1828. He died on 17 2 1837 age68/71 at hospital New Norfolk & was buried at St Matthews New Norfolk Van Diemens Land (Tasmania). She was tried at Dublin Ireland & arrived in NSW as a convict 11 2 1796 after a voyage of 6months on MARQUIS CORNWALLIS; & was sent to Norfolk Island on 13 2 1796 on HMS RELIANCE. She left Norfolk Island with her family on 26 12 1807 on HMS PORPOISE to Derwent Tasmania arriving on 17 1 1808; then to New Norfolk Derwent Valley. She was Free by Servitude by 1808. She was recorded as off stores at Hobart Town on 2 10 1818. When her husband was sentenced to Life at Newcastle for stealing sheep in 1817 she offerred her sheep to their owners. On 10 4 1830 she was found drunk & tried in Hobart Town-fined 5shillings & on 27 12 1830 tried on suspicion of stealing a loin of pork on 27 12 1830-case dismissed. She was at Crown Inn Pontville in 1840s with son James. She died on 30 3 1857 age93 at Pontville & was buried at St Marks Pontville. She was recorded as child off stores on Norfolk Island in February 1805. She left Norfolk Island with her parents on 26 12 1807 on HMS PORPOISE to Derwent Tasmania arriving on 17 1 1808; then to New Norfolk Derwent Valley. She was recorded as off stores at Hobart Town on 2 10 1818. She married Henry (Creswell) on 17 8 1820 at St Davids CofE Hobart. She died on 5 8 1833 age30 from childbirth? & was buried at St Matthews (CofE?) New Norfolk the same day as her daughters baptism. ..Henry (Crosswell/Chatt/Chap) was born about 1788/92. He was tried w/1other for horse theft, from Peter (Giles) of Hounslow on 19 9 1810, at Old Bailey on 31 10 1810, sentenced to death reprieved to Life, held at Middlesex Gaol Delivery & arrived in NSW as a convict on 18 1 1812 after a voyage of 5.5months on GUILDFORD. On 6 7 1830 he was issued his Conditional Pardon & on 9 9 1836 a Free Pardon. He is recorded in 1848 living at Blair St New Norfolk w/3others-perhaps some of his family. In 1857 he was in the New Norfolk area. When his father was sent to Newcastle in 1817/8 he became breadwinner for family. He was accused w/William (Stanfield) of arson on 7 7 1823, setting alight a barn of Antonio (Buckall) at New Norfolk-found not guilty on 10 6 1824. He was convicted w/brother John of stealing pigs from Henry (Oakes) of New Norfolk at Hobart Supreme Court in August 1827 & sentenced to 7years to be served at Macquarie Harbour; he was 5'7.75" brown hair grey eyes. In October 1827, following claim of innocence & support from settlers they were sent to Maria Island instead. He married Rebecca (Cox her first marriage) on 31 3 1829 & lived at Pontville. He worked for Chief Constable at Richmond & was promised Ticket of Leave after 12months with Aboriginal service. He supplied firewood to the Police Office. From 1833 he undertook care of 2of his sister Catherines daughters. In June 1838, a bridge was broken hindering access to his wood & he sought access to Crown land for wood. He was licensee of Crown Inn Pontville from 8 10 1841 (creation date of building=1843) until his death-his mother was here too. He had access to wood troubles again in 1842. He died on 12 3 1848 age50 & was buried at St Marks Pontville: his Will leaving all property to his wife & thereafter to niece Frances (Crossley/Crosswell). ..Rebecca (Cox) was born about 1806. In 1848 she received all her husbands property, to be passed on to her niece Frances (Crossley/Crosswell. In April 1851 she, Rebecca (Crawn), bought Crown Inn & 2allotments at Pontville. She married secondly William (Sharp) on 25 8 1853 & continued at the Inn. He was named in 1822 as one of the first students (age11) to attend on alternate days if a public school was formed. He became a whaler then a farmer at New Norfolk. He may have been convicted of stealing pigs about 1827. He married Sarah (Morgan) on 3 12 1838 at St Matthews (CofE?) New Norfolk. He died on 19 7 1847 the day after his daughters baptism age36 of consumption at New Norfolk. ..David (Crawn) & Sarah (Morgan) produced 4children: ..1.daughter born at New Norfolk ..2.David (Crawn) was born about 1842 at New Norfolk. He was living with uncle Francis (Cox) junior at Green Point Brighton when he died in 1855 age13, shot in the mouth while travelling to New Norfolk to get bricks-maybe shot by servant Joseph (Green) his companion, but not seen since. An inquest was held at Bridgewater Hotel.
