John Creimegan was transported on the Waterloo, departing 21st May 1836 and arriving 6th Sep 1836 with 220 passengers.
1829 - Waterloo's first voyage arrived at Sydney Cove 9 July 1829. 180 Male Convicts. 2 Died on voyage. 7 sent to the hospital on landing. Total mustered; 171. Stephen Addison - Commander Michael Goodsire - Surgeon Superintendent [His wife was a passenger] 1842 - The Waterloo voyage of 1842 was wrecked on 28/8/1842. 189 people drowned, these being 143 convicts, 15 men of the 99th Regiment, together with 17 wives and children, the boatswain Mr. Chiverton, the sailmaker, the carpenter and 11 of the crew. Convicts were then received in Cape Town Prison from the wreck of the Waterloo, 2nd September 1842. They then completed their voyage to VDL per “Cape Packet” which arrived on 23/11/1842.

Convict Notes




The Convict indentures state that John Creimegan was 19 years old. He could read; religion Roman Catholic; status single and a native of County Westmeath. He was a farm labourer. John was convicted of assaulting inhabitation at Westmeath on 29 February 1836 and sentenced to life. He had no prior convictions. Physical attributes; Height 5 feet 6 inches; complexion ruddy and freckled; hair brown and eyes chestnut. Transport number 180. Prisoner number 36-1983. Received ticket of leave on 11 October 1844 (number 44/2586) at Queanbeyan, NSW. Received Conditional Pardon in 1848 and certificate issued on 1 May 1849 (number 49/882). The Queanbeyan Church of England Register states that on 11 September 1842 that John Creanigan married Maria Mansfield at Palmerville by the Rev. Edward Smith. Witnesses were Charles Campbell of Giniderra and Catherine Campbell of Giniderra. Palmerville is now part of Giniderra, ACT. The Register of Canberra and Queanbeyan states that John Crinigan born 1817 Wem, IRL: mother possibly DONOHOH; arrived Sydney 6 September 1836 per Waterloo; arrived district c 1850 [not quiet true - see ticket of leave.]; occupation farmer and teamster; residence Queanbeyan, Duntroon, Stone Hut, Ginninderra Creek, later Logue's Creek, Canberra; religion Roman Catholic; died 6 April 1899 Canberra; buried Queanbeyan Riverside Cemetery. married i) 1842 Canberra Palmerville spouse Maria MANSFIELD; children John b 1844; Mary b 1845; Catherine b 1846, plus 6 other children - all above children died in infancy, Eliza Jane b 1850 at Glenwood - all the children were baptised in the name of DONOHOE although Eliza Jane always called herself CRINIGAN; ii) 1863 Queanbeyan St. Gregory's Roman Catholic Church married Margaret LOGUE nee MCELROY. Please note changes in spelling of surname. The surname is now spelt CRINIGAN NOT CREIMEGAN.
