National Records of Scotland Trial papers of Malcolm Gillespie, lately officer of excise, and lately residing at Crombie Cottage, parish of Skene, county of Aberdeen, George Brownie, crofter, lately at Blackhills, parish of Skene, and Alexandrina Campbell, lately residing at Crombie Cottage, all now or lately prisoners in the tolbooth of Aberdeen, for the crime of wilful fire raising. Dates 29 September 1827 Description First day of trial: 29 September 1827 Pled guilty art and part to the first charge of fire raising, but ignorant of any any intention to defraud the Fire Insurance. Sentenced to transportation beyond the seas for 7 years. Malcolm Gillespie not identified in Minute Book - no details available of pleading, verdict, and sentence. **Malcolm Gillespie was hung in November 1827 for the crime of 'Forgery'. Alexandrina Campbell arrived in VDL per 'Harmony' 1829. REAL NAME: GEORGE BROWNIE - his occupation was a "Crofter". Have not changed his name on entry as records on his arrival in VDL list him as "George Brownie Crofter". Please Note: There was also another George Browne/Brown on board who was tried at Somerset. George was born C1775 in Kimnach, Aberdeenshire as was said to be 53 years old. George was 5'7½" tall, dark nbrown hair and grey eyes, scar right side under lip, little finger right hand crooked. Wife and 1 child at Kimnach, Aberdeenshire, a Washerwoman. "I went about working for anyone who would employ me - I had two acres of my own land. 1830 Muster: Public Works 1832 Muster: TOL 1833 Muster: TOL There is a death listed for 'George Browne, aged 63 - Bengal Merchant - Object of Charity - he died at the Colonial Hospital. (The other George Brown/e on the Bengal Merchant would only have been 34 years old).
