A man named James Chronan, assigned to Mr. McClaren, of George-street, that Merchant, was had upon Tuesday, charged with robbery. It appeared that the prisoner arrived in the Colony so lately as by the ship Borodino, andwas immediately assigned to the service of Mr. McClaren. From every thing that came out in evidence, he was treated with the utmost kindness by his master, notwithstanding which, after the lapse of a few days, he paid a visit to the Police Office, and having suffered the punishment of his misconduct, was returned to his service. A few days after, however, in consequence of continued misconduct, the prisoner was given in charge of a constable by his master, and conveyed to the watch house, for the purpose of being returned to Government. His baggage was sent along with him, and a sort of overweening desire to convey his bed into the cell where he was locked up, having been noticed by the constable on duty, it was searched, and several pieces of chintz, the property of Mr. McClaren, were discovered concealed within. He was sentenced to a penal settlement for three years. Sydney Gazette, 12 Sep 1828. (His name appears to have been mistakenly reported as James Chronan in the above report, instead of Michael Cronin.)
