George Crooks was transported on the Surrey Or Surry, departing 31st Dec 1813 and arriving 28th Jul 1814 with 204 passengers.

Built at Harwich in 1811 a square-rigged transport ship of 443 tons and copper lined she had two decks with a height between decks of 5 ft. 8 ins. In 1818, she had a major refit increasing the decks (and convict carrying capacity) to three. She was owned by the London firm of F. & C.F. Mangles.

Family connections for George (Crooks) are: CROOKS George (Crooks) was born about 1782/6. He was tried at Stafford Assizes on 11 3 1813, sentenced to 14years & arrived in NSW as a convict on 28 7 1814 after a voyage of 7months on SURREY. He was an emancipist by 1821. He was recommended for mitigation of sentence on 30 11 1821. He was an emancipist when he married thirdly with permission Mary (York her third marriage) emancipist on 21 12 1821 at St Johns CofE Parramatta. He was considered for a Ticket of Leave in 1823. He is recorded in 1828 with his wife & a child at Mt Pleasant Bringelly-farmer at St Vincent. [Some details taken from this Website] Mary (Murry) was born about 1768. She had a first (1of3)relationship/marriage with William (York). She was tried at Bristol Quarter Sessions, sentenced to 7years & arrived in NSW as a convict with her child on 11 4 1806 after a voyage of 9.5months on WILLIAM PITT. She had a second (2of3) relationship with William (Cosgrove) & produced perhaps 4children. She lived about 1818 at Bringelly when her son Henry joined her as an assigned convict. She was an emancipist by 1821. She is recorded in 1828 with her husband & a child at Mt Pleasant Bringelly. She died on 16 9 1842 age74 mother of maybe 6known children & was buried with her husband at Parramatta Pioneers cemetery.
