Convict Notes

Correction to my previous note about his marriage: the marriage was in Sydney on 3 September 1836. They had applied on 27 June 1836 for permission to marry.

William Crookshanks was born about 1807 at Birmingham, Warwickshire, England. He was convicted on 28 February 1825 at the Southampton Assizes, Winchester, Hampshire, England, and sentenced to 14 years transportation. He was sent to the York hulk at Portsmouth, on 2 May 1825, age recorded as 18, crime recorded as "Robbery". He was transported on the Marquess of Hastings which left England on 19 August 1825 and arrived at Sydney, New South Wales on 3 January 1826. He was described as aged 18 years, 5ft 8in in height, with fair complexion, blue eyes, brown hair, with a scar on the left cheek bone, born at Birmingham, and had been employed as a Clerk. He was sent to Wellington Valley for distribution. He was listed at Wellington Valley in the 1828 census. He received a Ticket of Leave on 29 November 1834 for the district of Port Stephens, New South Wales, Australia. On 27 June 1836 William Crookshanks married Zophiel Bloomfield. Their marriage was recorded in the register of St Andrew's Scots Presbyterian Church, Sydney, New South Wales. As William Crookshanks was a convict, they had to get permission to marry. His wife, Zophiel Bloomfield, had arrived in Sydney with her parents and siblings on 17 December 1833 on the Layton as unassisted migrants. William is not listed in the 1837 General Return of Convicts. It is not known what happened to William Crookshanks. His widow was known as Zophielle Cruickshank when she died in 1892 at Paddington, New South Wales.
