Tried at the Old Bailey, 6 Dec 1827. First London Jury - before Mr. Recorder. 6. JOHN CROW was indicted for embezzling the sum of 1300l. and 300l., which he had received on account of Sir William Pratt Call , Bart. , and others, his masters . The prisoner pleaded GUILTY . Aged 21. Transported for Fourteen Years . ----------------------------------------------- National Archives. Criminal Petitions. HO 17/103/45. Date: 1827 Dec- 1828 Apr. Prisoner name: John Crowe. Prisoner age: 21. Prisoner occupation: Clerk in banking house. Court and date of trial: Old Bailey December Sessions 1827. Crime: Embezzling money from his employers. Initial sentence: 14 years transportation. Gaoler's report: Former character and connections respectable. Annotated (Outcome): Nil. Petitioner(s): Prisoner. Margaret Crowe of 30 Park Street, Upper Baker Street, widow, the prisoner's mother. Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner is young and this is his first offence; he is of previous good character; he was induced to commit the crime by 'an artful woman'; he has an aged mother and two sisters to support; he was unable to afford counsel. Other papers: Four letters from M Tucker, 35 Manchester Street, London, the prisoner's sponsor; two transmitting petitions, one in support of the prisoner and the other requesting the prisoner's mother be allowed to give 'comforts' to her son before transportation.
