James CULLEN was convicted at Dublin on 24 Oct 1841 for cattle stealing - a cow and heifer. 10yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'British Sovereign' arriving 17 March 1841. Aged 21yrs; single man; Roman Catholic; carpenter' 5'3 1/2"; can read & write. Native Place: Dublin 15mths Probation Period in the Colony. 1844: a Constable at Pontville. 1846: a Constable at Richmond. Neglect of duty - 12mths hard labour and to be dismissed from Police Force. 17 April 1846: Ticket of Leave granted. 31 Mar 1847: Application for permission to marry - to Mary Holehouse (per Tory). Approved. Cannot locate an actual marriage registration on records. (Interestingly Mary Holehouse, per Tory, applied again for permission to marry a John Cray and married him in Jan 1849. She had given birth to a baby in 1847 at the Female Factory but baby died as an infant.) 9 Jan 1849: Conditional Pardon approved. 30 Dec 1851: Free Certificate. 2 Jan 1852 a James Cullen left VDL for Melbourne, Victoria per the 'Rebecca', as a passenger. Listed as an Irish carpenter, aged 30yrs.
