9 July, 1851: Patrick Cullen was transferred to Dartmoor Prison at Princetown (UK, Prison Commission Records, 1770-1951 for Patrick Cullen; Misc.; Register of Prisoners; 1774-1789??). Originally built in 1809 and first used for prisoners of war, Dartmoor was reopened as a male convict public works prison in November 1850. Within five years the prison became reserved for less able-bodied convicts (https://www.prisonhistory.org/prison/dartmoor-prison/). --00-- NOTE: His jail records give his trade as a labourer, but the ship's surgeon identifies him as a soldier.


JAIL: 10 July, 1850: Transferred from the Stirling Castle hulk at Portsmouth (where he was prisoner #2943) and received aboard the Defence hulk -- Patrick Cullen, 25, prisoner #561, Roman Catholic. He had been convicted at Maidstone of a felony, with a previous conviction for same and sentenced to 7 years' transportation. Gaolers' reports: Shorncliff indifferent; Stirling Castle hulk good. Born: Bridge Lane, Wexford, Ireland. Description: Sandy hair, grey eyes, fair complexion; 5'7" tall. Labourer; illiterate. Health good on receipt from the hulk. TRIAL: 4 April, 1848: Patrick Cullen, 25, illiterate, was tried and convicted at Maidstone for larceny; he had a previous conviction for felony (England & Wales, Criminal Registers, 1791-1892 for Patrick Cullen; England; Kent; 1848). --0--
