DEPARTURE: “CHAMPION BAY ... We have had a very fine ship here, the ‘Amyone’, 1300 tons, arriving from Melbourne on the 13th and sailing for Calcutta on the 23rd with 121 horses shipped by M. Brown Esq., M. L. C. We understand that it is the intention of this gentleman to make yearly shipments of a like quantity.” The “Amyone” sailed from Geraldton on Sunday, 30 January (WA Times, 4 Feb 1876, p2 at https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/2975502). --00--

BACK TO CALCUTTA: He is on a “Register of Expirees and Conditional Pardon Holders who have left the Colony during the Quarter ending March 151st, 1876”: Thomas Cullen, expiree, was one of four such passengers who sailed for Calcutta on the “Amyone” on 23 January, 1876. Described as middling stout, 43 years, 6ft., unmarried, dark brown hair, dark grey eyes, long visage, sallow complexion; marks – VR, crown, flags, pile of shot, star, half moon, drum and drumsticks, and two bugles right arm; cut left thumb. OTHER: Thomas Cullen’s WA Convict Record gives very few details about the man. It is a brief document. That is, aside from his convict number, name, name of the ship, minimal court martial details and Ticket of Leave date, there is no physical description, no personal details, and no record of his placements on ToL or any punishments/remittances. Only his character is commented on – as “quarrelsome” (Western Australia, Australia, Convict Records, 1846-1930; Convict Department, Registers; General Register for Nos 4375-4534, 1017, 6383-6458 (R24-R25)). Some of the gaps in this record have been filled by the description of him in the WA Police Gazette of 1876, as below. --0--
