Maidstone Journal and Kentish Advertiser Kent, England 8 Jan 1839: Felony and Serious Accident.__On Friday night, two roasting pigs were stolen from the shop window of Mr. Fennis, butcher, at Exmouth-terrace, Gillingham, and on the theft being discovered a pursuit was commenced and run so close that the pigs were dropped on the Lines, and on going further a man, named William Cummins, was found in the bottom of the fosse of the garrison, having fallen over and broken his leg. He denied that he was the thief, but it is expected there will be sufficient evidence to commit him for trial if he recovers from his hurts. The police of the neighbourhood have long been in search of this notorious offender, as there are several former charges of serious degree against him. One of his companions names Polly, was apprehended the following morning and is in custody. William Cummins was listed as 22 years old on arrival. Native Place: Chatham. Occupation: Pork butcher. William was literate, protestant, married, no children listed, 5'10" tall, fair ruddy complexion, brown hair, hazel grey eyes, mole under left ear, another under left jaw, mole on upper, St::P inside lower right arm, middle finger of right hand contracted, scar inside same, scar on forefinger of left hand.
