On the 30th Oct 1815 John DAFT late of Horncastle, Lincolnshire labourer robbed Mark PARKER of West Keal, Lincolnshire labourer on the highway in the parish of Horncastle. Robbing him of 2 guineas and one half guinea in gold, a 5 shillings and 6 pence dollar and 3 shilling bank tokens. Mark PARKER was returning home at night from Horncastle Fair when he heard someone running after him. A quarter of a mile outside town DAFT tripped him up, turned him over on his back and put his knee into his stomach and demanded money with the threat of violence. DAFT left him him going after handing over the items but PARKER hid in a dyke fearing DAFT would return for more money. PARKER returned to Horncastle and the next morning and told the constable he had been robbed. Isaac BEECHAM constable of Horncastle, as a result of information received which threw suspicion on John DAFT, apprehended him in The Crown Inn at Horncastle. DAFT was found to be in possession of all of the stolen items. At his trial the jury found him guilty and he was sentenced to death, which was commuted to 14 years imprisonment. He was transported to NSW and then onto Tasmania. He was found to be of remarkably good character. He drowned as a result of an accident. John DAFT left behind in England a wife and five children. One of whom was born the month after he was sentenced at Lincoln Assizes.
