The 'Ocean' was an English merchant ship and whaler built in 1794 at South Shields, England. In 1803 she accompanied the ship 'Calcutta' to Australia, acting as a transport supply ship. When the settlers abondoned Port Phillip, Melbourne, Victoria the ship transferred convicts, settlers and marines to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). In 1815, 1817 & 1823 the 'Ocean' transported convicts to New South Wales.

Assize Intelligence. YORK. The following are the prisoners who have been capitally convicted, and who have received sentence of death :— Joseph Dale, … for burglary, … The two first in this sad enumeration were executed on Monday the 17th inst.— ... the rest are reprieved.   Manchester Mercury, 1 April 1817.  The following male convicts left the Castle,  on Monday morning, to be delivered on board the Retribution Hulk at Sheerness, up the river Medway, viz.— Joseph Dale, … to be severally transported for life. York Herald, 17 May 1817.
