_______________________________ Two men named John Daley were tried at Limerick at the March 1825 Limerick Assizes, both aged 28, both given Life sentences. This makes it hard to distinguish between them later in NSW. However, the John Daly of this entry was a farmer born in Co Limerick (the other one a shopkeeper born in Co Cork) and this one was convicted of housebreaking (the other one had stolen a cow). They had each received the death sentence, but were reprieved, as recorded in the Freemans Journal, 30 March 1825, p.2: “ Thursday, an order was received from the Lord Lieutenant by the County Sheriff responding, until further order, the execution of Edmond hall, John Daly, Timothy McMahon and John Daly, sentence to death at our last assizes — Limerick Paper” State Records NSW, Convict Indents ref Vol. number 4/4011, Ship ‘Sir Godfrey Webster 1826; John Daley, Aged: 28 years Born at County Limerick; Can read; Farmer; Single, Crime: Housebreaking, Tried: 28 Mar 1825 at Limerick, Sentence: Life; Embarked Sir Godfrey Webster arrived 3 Jan 1826; Arrival Status: Convict, Assigned to GREENAWAY, State Records NSW, Convict Indents ref Vol. number 4/4011, Ship ‘Sir Godfrey Webster 1826; Volume entry number: 47.
