Family connections for John (Dalton) are: DALTON John (Dalton) was born about 1776. He was tried for stealing w/1other child cotton shawl of Edward (Fellows), on 30 9 1787, at Old Bailey on 27 10 1787, sentenced to 7years, held at Middlesex Gaol Delivery & arrived in NSW as a convict on 9 7 1791 after a voyage of 6months on Fleet ship ALBERMARLE. About 1792, at age16, he associated with Elizabeth (Morris her first (1of4) relationship). On 15 11 1794 he sailed as a crewman on SALAMANDER, headed for Norfolk Island, India & Europe. A John (Dalton) from ALBERMARLE is recorded as arriving on Norfolk Island on 27 1 1796 (an Ann (Dalton) is there also. [Some details taken from this Website] Elizabeth (Morris) daughter of John (Morris) & Sarah (Collins) was born on 31 7 1775. In about 1785 she was acquitted of felony at Bristol Gloucestershire. She was tried for grand larceny w/2adults at Bristol Sessions Oyer & Terminer Commission on 5 4 1790 (one ref. shows her as age12), sentenced to 7years & arrived in NSW as a convict on 9 7 1791 after a voyage of 5months on Fleet ship MARY ANN/E. She was Free by Servitude by 1799. When her second husband died she took over running of farm with children Hannah, William & John; & convict Murtagh/Murty (Shields) was apparantly assigned to her. She married secondly (2of4) William (Kentwell) on 4 1 1796 at St Johns CofE Parramatta & produced 5children. She had a third (3of4) relationship with Murtagh/Murty (Shields) & produced 1child. She had a fourth relationship with Thomas (Thompkins), produced 2children & married him (ages recorded as her68 & him29) on 15 8 1820 at St Johns CofE Parramatta. She died on 25 1 1852 age77 mother of 9children. She was placed in Female Orphan Institution. After 1809 she assisted her mother in running their farm. She married firstly Samuel (Beckett) on 21 5 1820 at St Johns CofE Parramatta & produced 3children.>>> ..Samuel (Beckett) was born on 18 7 1795 & baptised on 9 9 1795 at St Johns CofE Parramatta. He is recorded in 1814 at Parramatta as a labourer. In 1820 he probably received the 30acre property at Toongabbie from his mother; he is also recorded as attending his mothers fourth marriage in 1820. He is recorded in 1827 as farmer at Seven Hills. Old Bailey Proceedings Online October 1787, trial of JOHN LEAR JOHN DALTON (t17871024-55). JOHN LEAR, JOHN DALTON, Theft > grand larceny, 24th October 1787. 866. JOHN LEAR , aged 13, and JOHN DALTON , aged 11, were indicted for stealing, on the 28th of September , a cotton shawl, value 3 s. the property of Edward Fellows . EDWARD FELLOWS sworn. I am a haberdasher , No. 19, Tottenham-court-road ; I lost a shawl out of my shop; the prisoners took it out of the middle of the shop; it was upon a horse which we hang them on to shew; I did not see either of the boys take it; I saw it about three hours before, about ten in the morning; I did not see the boys about the shop ever; I did not sell it. ROBERT HANMER sworn. I live opposite the prosecutor's; about one, on the 28th of September, I saw three lads walking to and fro' the prosecutor's house; I saw one of the lads go up to the street door, the shop door is in the middle of the shop, and he unhooked a shawl that was hanging in the front of the shop; that boy is not here, he has since escaped; the woman at the next door came out, seeing them lurking about the door, and bade them go away; the boys then walked about twenty yards from Mr. Fellows's; then they all three came back together, and the biggest of the prisoners went into the shop, and took this shawl, which I have in my pocket, from the horse that was in the shop; the shawl has been in my possession ever since; I then ran after the boy, and the tallest boy that took the shawl, gave it to Dalton, as they were running; about twenty yards from the house, he put it in the bosom of his coat, and I took it from him; I took the two prisoners, the third boy ran away. Tried by the first Middlesex Jury before Mr. Justice HEATH.




John was only 11 years old when convicted and transported. John formed a relationship with Elizabeth Morris (Convict; Mary Anne, 1791) C1792 and they had a daughter Hannah Dalton born 1793. They were both in their teens at this stage, he 16 and she 17. It would appear that John Left the colony soon thereafter. In 1794 he is listed as a crewman on the 'Salamander' which sailed from Sydney 15 November 1794. The ship sailed to Norfolk Island and then onto India and Europe. No further record of John appears in any muster or census.
