Westmeath Assizes. Monday last our Assizes commenced before the Right Hon. Lord Norbury, and the Right Hon. Judge Daly, ... The following capital convictions took place, viz. ...Thomas Dalton, found guilty of robbing the Mail, between Kinnegad and Castlepollard the ? of November last—-to be executed on Thursday, the 7th of September next. ... PRINCIPAL SUPERINTENDANT'S OFFICE, Sydney, September 14, 1816. SEVERAL Prisoners having absconded from their Employment during this Week, and particularly the undermentioned, it is hereby directed that every Exertion shall be made on the Part of the Police, as well as the Settlers and Inhabitants of the Colony, to apprehend the Persons referred to, who are suspected of the Piracy of the Brig Trial, on the Night of the 12th Instant. Thomas Dalton, tried in the County West Meath in August 1815, convicted for life, 35 years of age, a groom and servant, native of West Meath, 5 feet 7 inches high, hazle eyes, sandy hair, fair ruddy complexion, arrived per Guilford 2d, and was assigned as Govt. Servant to Mr. T. Rose, Sydney, who reports his absence on Thursday evening last. Sydney Gazette, 21 Sept 1816.




Thomas Dalton was convicted at Westmeath in August 1815. Life sentence. Transported to New South Wales, Australia per the 'Guildford' arriving 08/04/1816. Aged 35yrs; groom & servant. One of the convicts who escaped from the Colony 12/09/1816 having seized the brig ‘Trial’. No trace of them was found despite attempts to trace them. The wreck of the ‘Trial’ was however found. Some were believed to have gone bush or went in a small boat made from the shipwreck.
