John DANCER was convicted at Bedford on 13 March 1827 for burglary - stealing from a dwelling house. Gaol report: "orderly", not known before. 14 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), Australia per the ship 'Asia' arriving 1827. Stated he was last in the service of Mr. Bull, Attorney at Aylsbury. I was a footman. Had been out of employment for 3 months. I was 4 yrs in Lord Nugents family. My brother at native place, a shoemaker, I was working for him. Single man; Protestant; aged 21 yrs; 5'4" height; brown hair; grey eyes. Place of birth: Burston, Buckhamshire, England (ref. convict records) VDL: Assigned to work services. 18 May 1830: Assigned to Mr & Mrs Lasceles - repeated neglect of duties and insolent to Mrs. Lasceles. 25 lashes and returned to duties. No further reports. Feb 1834:Pass holder status granted. APPLICATION FOR PERMISSION TO MARRY: 13 March 1835: Eliza KNIGHT per ‘William Bryan’ to John DANCER per ‘Asia’. Approved. (ref. 52/1/1 pg 33) MARRIAGE: 18 May 1835 - Eliza KNIGHT, convict (ship ‘William Bryant’), spinster to John DANCER, Ticket of Leave (ship ‘Asia) at Hobart Town. (ref. 36/1/2 no. 2748) DEATH: Death of John DANCER, at Hobart Town on 10 March 1837, aged 31 yrs. No cause stated.(ref. 34/1/1 no. 4813) An official Free Certificate was issued in 1841, but evidence that John Dancer died in 1837, so a formality. He was the only convict in the Colony of this name.
