Judge Moore has fixed Thursday for the trial of John Keogh, Thomas Keogh, Patrick Keogh and Michael Teacey, charged as principals in the murder of Daniel Mara. Besides those, there are 12 or 14 to be tried for a conspiracy to murder Mara; and a strong belief prevails of their conviction. Limerick Chronicle, 5 April 1828.
Clonmel Assizes. William Grace, James Daniel, and Michael Looby, were indicted for having aided in the conspiracy to murder Daniel Mara. Lancaster Gazette, 26 April 1828. REPRIEVE. Clonmel, Friday. —An express has arrived in town to stay the execution of William Grace, Thomas Maher, Michael Tracy, Michael Looby, James Daniel, and Thomas Keogh, jun. They were sent off for transportation for life under an escort. Dublin Evening Packet, 15 April 1828. Yesterday, about one o’clock, and without one hour’s notice, William Grace, Thos. Keogh, Edmund Daniel, Thomas Maher, Michael Looby, and Michael Tracy, proceeded on an outside car from the county gaol escorted a party of the Scots Greys, with drawn swords, to the Hulks at Cove, where they are remain till they are embarked board the convict ships, to be transported for life. The Convict Indentures state that James Daniel was 22 years old. He could read and write; religion Catholic; status single and a native of Tipperary. His trade was a ploughman and reaps. He was convicted of conspiracy or murder at Tipperary on 8 April 1828. He was sentence to life and had no prior convictions. Physical attributes - Height 5 feet 5 inches; complexion ruddy and freckled; hair dark brown. Transport number 55. Assigned to Mr John W. Drugall, Bathurst. Received ticket of leave in 1837 (number 37/362).
