Margaret Green was indicted for the property of Mr T Plymouth, Elizabeth Darke 30, Mary Darke her child years, receiving the same, knowing it to have stolen. It was proved in evidence as well Green’s confession, that she on some day in early part of this month entered bed-room of prosecutor, opened the trunk the money leaving 4 behind there 40 in the trunk it the elder Darke it her and told her she might shilling when liked that did supply her with sums of money well as fruit daily — Mr Phillips constable proved the finding 5 and three 1 notes sewn up in old bonnet which was the wall in Darke's house Mrs was enabled swear to the 5 note— Green and the elder Darke were Guilty and learned Judge immediately passed Death on Green and 14 transportation on Darke, the younger prisoner was acquitted. Sherborne Mercury, 5 August, 1822. --------------------------------------------------- NSW Convict Index. Assize Intelligence. Margaret Green, aged 12, Mary Ann Drake. 9, and Elizabeth Drake, the mother of the latter. Age ... the amount of nearly £50. — Margaret Green Was found guilty of the felony and sentenced to death; Mary Ann Drake was acquitted; and Elizabeth Drake was sentenced to 14 years transportation, for receiving. This trial excited considerable interest from the extraordinary talent displayed by the two unfortunate children in their defence ; though- in tears from the commencement of the trial, they watched the evidence with a perfect knowledge of the points which bore on their respective cases, and replied to it with such acuteness, readiness and self-possession, as excited the most marked surprise throughout the court. In passing sentence his Lordship declared declared he had never before witnessed such precocity of human intellect. The following prisoners received sentence of death; ...
