Constable John Johnston was convicted of Darlington's manslaughter & sentenced to 7yrs transportation. The constable confronted Darlington in Morpeth on 9 March 1840 as Darlington was slightly intoxicated & arguing with his fiancée. Constable pulled a pistol which he held to the deceased's back when it discharged. Darlington died 4 days later.




Buried Glebe Burial Ground 14 Mar 1840 with notation 'From the Coroner' & 'Shot by a Constable' on 13 Mar 1840 location recorded as Morpeth, near East Maitland.
