James Davenport - was born in Cheshire, England and convicted at Stafford, England 18th MAR 1814, sentenced to transportation for life. James was described as a labourer, 5’9½“tall, dark pale complexion, dark brown hair and hazel eyes, he was blind in the left eye. He arrived on the “Baring” 7 Sep 1815 and was sent to Liverpool for distribution. James was killed by natives in the District of Cowpastures 12 Mar 1816. In March 1816, after two years of severe drought, the Gundungurra (Gandangara) came down from the mountains to attack settlers in the outlying Cow Pastures (Camden) district, burning houses and sheds, spearing cattle and plundering crops. They killed four men employed by George T Palmer (son of Commissary John Palmer) at the Nepean River and three of Mrs Elizabeth Macarthur’s stock-keepers at Camden. It is likely that this was the incident that saw James Davenport lose his life.
