Police Reports, Sydney. David Jordan, a prisoner of the crown, Iately employed as wards man in the gaol, was brought forward on a charge of abetting the attempted escape of Tennant and Ricks, on the morning of Thursday last. It appeared that the prisoner was employed as wards man and assistant to the surgeon in the gaol-hospital, where these desperadoes were confined, and slept in the same apartment. The sentinel who was on duty in the yard, on the morning of Thursday, stated that about three o'clock, he heard a noise as if some plaster was fulling in the hospital, upon which he immediately gave the alarm and, together with the deputy gaoler, proceeded to the hospital and called out to the prisoner, who twice answered all is right, and that the noise proceeded from some drunken man on the rocks. The witness and the gaoler then examined other parts of the prison, and hiving procured a light, returned again to the hospital, where on entering the room where the prisoner slept, and where Tennant and Ricks, together with others, were confuted, they found some of the iron bedstands raised on end above each other, and an aperture made in the ceiling of the room, which was formed of strong boards nailed down. Tennant and Ricks were discovered on the loft, where they had succeeded in opening a passage through (the shingles on the roof, through which, but for the timely interposition of the sentry and the gaoler, they could have escaped. The witnesses all swore that it was impossible but the prisoner must have heard the noise that was unavoidably made by the confines in attempting their purpose.
