Robert changed his surname from Drummond to his mother's maiden name Davies when he was charged at the age of 14. At the time his occupation was stated as carpenters boy. He received his certificate of freedom No. 47-135 on 2 Feb 1847 at Carcoar New South Wales. By this time he had a trade as a Blacksmith and ultimately started his own blacksmith business in Bathurst and Forbes, New South Wales.
