William DAVIS, and Davis Gillis,was convicted at the CCC, London on 2 March 1840 for housebreaking and stealing - a writing desk containing jewellery. Both found guilty and received 10 yr transportation sentences. Hulk Report: "good". William sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), Australia per the ship 'Tortoise' arriving 19 Feb 1842. Ship surgeon's report: "orderly". Aged 19 yrs; 5'3 1/4"; a tailor; single man; Protestant; can read & write; fresh complexion; brown hair; dark eyes. Native place of birth: Greenwich, London. Father: William, a Publican at Greenwich. Mother: Ann, at Chelsea 2 Brothers, 1 Sister. Colony of VDL: 18 mths Probation Period Good remarks. 2 months of term of sentence deducted for his efforts in extinguishing a fire. Assigned at Perth, Tas, Longford, Norfolk Plains. 2 March 1847: Ticket of Leave granted. 4 March 1850: Free Certificate issued.
