William Deans' SCOTTISH CRIME Inverness Courier - Wednesday 25 April 1827 page 2 "William Deans, accused of theft, aggravated by shop breaking, and being habit and repute a common thief, pled guilty to the theft, but not to the aggravations libelled. The Advocate-Deput restricted the libel, and after leading evidence as to the charge of habit and repute, the Lord Justice Clerk summed up the case, and the Jury returned a verdict finding the panel guilty of the theft on his own confession, and of the aggravation of habit and repute from the proof adduced [NOTE: probably from prior convictions].
