1840, 10 January: After serving most of his time on road gangs, following his absconding from servitude as early as 1832, James Dearing (seaman and native of Plymouth) absconded from a work gang at Oatlands and was eventually struck off the record in 1853 (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON34-1-3$init=CON34-1-3P349).

1832: On arrival in VDL James Deering/Dearing was described on his Conduct Record as "an old London thief, as bad as they can be". He "went down to Bedford to commit this burglary" with John Atkinson (also on board the Elizabeth). He was 43 and single (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON31-1-10$init=CON31-1-10p79). 1837: His co-accused for the burglary at Bedford, John Atkinson, petitioned for clemency and named James Deering as the sole offender and a witness in support of his petition, as per this summary record from the National Archives, Kew: "HO 17/33/112 ... Prisoner name: John Atkinson. Court and date of trial: Bedford Summer Assizes, 4 July 1831. Crime: Burglary in premises of Mr Bull, jeweller of Bedford, together with James Deering (or James Dearing). Initial sentence: [Death respited to] Transportation for life. Gaoler’s report: Character of the worst description. London thief. Annotated (Outcome): Ticket of leave in the Colony may be granted by Governor if he thinks fit. Petitioner(s): The prisoner, undersigned by John Gregory, Colonial Treasurer, and Joseph Morgan, Chief Constable, both of Van Diemen’s Land, testifying to his good conduct. Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Innocent as crime committed by James Deering; good conduct. Other papers: Copy of conduct reports of prisoner and James Deering in Van Diemen’s Land. Copy of statements of prisoner, and three statements of James Deering. Copy of covering letters from prisoner and Lieutenant Governor of Van Diemen’s Land, with forwarding letter from Downing Street. Memorandum of case and decision. Additional Information: Transported, together with James Deering, in 1832 on board Elizabeth to Van Diemen’s Land. Worked as police constable in Van Diemen’s Land.
