Catherine Delaney was transported on the John Calvin, departing 24th Jan 1848 and arriving 18th May 1848 with 92 passengers.
Built 1839 at Greenock, Scotland. Wood barque of 510 Tons. The 1848 voyage with Irish female convicts. The John Calvin, with 171 female convicts, arrived yesterday. She left London on the 26th December, and went to Kingston, when she took on board her prisoners, and left on the 24th January. There have been four deaths on board and three births, one infant still born. She did not touch any where and spoke no vessels for this place. Hobart Town Advertiser, 19 May 1848.

On the 15 Oct 1847 in Borris-in-Ossory Quarter Sessions, (not Queens) Ireland a 20 year old country servant named Catherine Delaney/Whelan was transported for 7 years for larceny with apparel, stealing a coat. First offence stealing a fowl. Received at Grangegorman Prison 16 Oct 1847 then on to the John Calvin leaving 24 Jan 1848. Surgeons Journal notes a Thomas Whellan aged 2 on the 10 Feb, unsure if he is Catherine’s as convict listing is incomplete for the John Calvin, possibly another Wheelan on board? Catherine Delaney not mentioned in surgeons journal, however Cath Wheelan age 19, is scolded 1 April 1848 on her face neck and chest with a saucepan of boiling pea soup. Wheelan is described as “strong masculine women belonging to County Antrim constantly feigning disease and a very troublesome character…….”. Arriving in Hobart 18 May 1848 Conduct Register CON41-1-16P51 notes Catherine Delaney with “mark of burn on neck and throat”, not mentioned at Grangegorman. To the HMS Anson "Reformatory" 3rd Class for 6 months gang probation on the River Derwent. Employed by Michael Lyons Snr at Circular Head, Tasmania for 3 months. Married James Forbes 05 Feb 1851 at St Pauls Horton Tasmania, in time for the 17 Mar 1851 birth of son James Hector at Circular Head. The next 3 children born here, then Thomas was born and died 30 Nov 1862 day in Launceston. Possible date of death for James Forbes, Catherine Delaney/Whelan not yet!
