Convict Notes

Bridget Delany, for a glass Decanter from Richard Butler on the ? Feb.—to be transported for 7 years. Kilkenny Moderator, 14 March 1832. Escape from Prison.— Ten female prisoners, five of whom were under sentence of transportation, escaped from Kilkenny gaol about 12 o'clock on Saturday last. A small opening was made by displacing a short iron bar from one of the windows in the day-room appropriated to the use of females, through which they passed out; they then easily got on the top of an adjoining wall and dropped down in front of Mr. Smithwick's dwelling-house and passed out through that gentleman's lodge gate. It has not yet been ascertained whether the bar was removed from within or by means of assistance from the outside. The following are the names of the individuals who escaped on the occasion: Convicts. Untried- Catherine Palmer, Margaret Delany, Bridget Delany, Catherine Carroll, Mary Bagnal, Judith Picet, Bridget Tynan, Bridget Keating, Caroline Fitzpatrick, Margaret Harrington. Bridget Delany, one the convicts, and one of the untried prisoners, have been since retaken at Castlecomer. The prisoners effected their escape during the temporary absence of Mr. Duncan, the Governor of the City Gaol, who had not then returned from Cove, where he had gone to leave Convicts on board the Hulk Surprise, He arrived here on Sunday evening and has been since in active pursuit of the fugitives. Cork Constitution, 26 April 1832. Three of them were retaken in Castlecomer on ‘the next day, and one of those, named Bridget Delany, on last, sought to put a period to her existence by tying a handkerchief tightly round her neck —The cries of some of of the’ prisoners in the ward alarmed the turnkey, who found her in an insensible state, from which she was soon recovered. About three years past the same girl, in prison made an attempt on her life. None of the other seven have yet been taken. Kilkenny Journal. Dublin Morning Register, 30 April 1832.
