Caledonian Mercury 19 March 1840 Robert Demause and Agnes Rae were accused of assualting, to the effusion of blood and injury to the person of Duncan Macgregor, porter to the Commercial Bank in the High Street in January last and robbing him of a pocket-book, consisting a £1 note of the Commercial Bank and a bill of exchange or promissory note for £184.6s. There was also an alternate charge against the prisoners of theft. It was distincly proved that the prisoners had taken the pocket-book and its contents from the breast pocket of Macgregor, by evidence of a socins criminis, named Janet Young, and the testimony of other witnesses. It did not appear clearly, however, that the assualt, and robbery had taken place. The Solicitor-General, in addressing the Jury, observed that they could find this a case of assualt although not one of robbery, because the prisoners had, after taking the pocker-book from Macgregor pushed him violently against the pavement. If they had any doubt as to the charge of assualt and robbery, they ought by all means to give the prisoners the benefit of such doubt. The Jury having consulted for a few minutes, returned a verdict finding the prisoners Guilty of theft, and the charge of assult and robbery Not Proven. They were sentenced to transportation for seven years.

Tarleton, coroner, and a jury, held an inquest at the Eardley Arms yesterday afternoon, respecting the circumstances attendant upon the death of Mr. Robert Demanse. Mr. Samuel Dove was chosen foreman of the jury. Mrs. Mary Ann Anderson, a resident of Park-street, deposed that the deceased was at work in her house last Friday morning. When he came to work he complained of being un-well. About an hour after arrival he was painting an inner door, and while she was speaking to him he fell forward and expired. She raised the body, and sent for assistance. The deceased appeared to have struck his forehead on the floor when he fell. Dr. E. S. Hall deposed to seeing the body of Demanse on Friday morning, when he found that life was extinct. Next day the doctor made a postmortem examination, and found that the body was well nourished, and, with the exception of two slight wounds which were probably sustained whilst falling, without blemish. Both lungs were adherent to the walls of the chest, from old inflammation of the pleura. The right lung was thoroughly infiltrated with blood, the result of a rupture of some of its blood-vessels. The left lung was highly conjested. The heart was pale, flabby, and enlarged, while its cavities contained dark blood clots. The liver was very large. Death resulted from pulmonary apoplexy. Under the circumstances described, death would be very sudden. A verdict was returned in accordance with the medical testimony. 7/10/1879 The Mercury, Hobart: DEATHS.
