John was 26 years old on arrival in VDL and his native place was Cork County. John was 5’7” tall, fresh complexion, dark brown hair and whiskers, hazel eyes, RC, Illiterate and single. Brothers: Andrew, Timothy Sisters: Peggy and Ellen all at his native place. John served his probation at Rocky Hills Station on the east coast of Tasmania. Later he went to work for Henry Lyne at his Great Swanport property ‘Coombend’. Working at the neighbouring property ‘Apslawn’ for his master’s brother John Lyne was Annette Myers. 20/8/1850: TOL 2/5/1856: Certificate at Launceston. 13/12/1863: CP approved. 1852: married Annette Myers ((Emma Eugenia 1850) and had 1 child, Francis born in 1854. They appear to have remained in the district for a time, at least until the birth of their only child Francis William in 1854. John and Annette’s son, Francis, was born at Spring Bay in 1854. The family later moved to Launceston before they moved to Victoria The family eventually settled on the fringes of gentility in South Yarra where John worked as a gardener. Francis married and fathered a son, yet when he died at the Kew Lunatic Asylum in 1926, he died alone. Annette died in 1879 aged 60. John Desmond remarried soon after. John left his new wife, Mary Ann Fullerton, to raise their two year-old daughter, Rose Diana, when he died in 1886.
