Hobart Town Advertiser : Weekly Edt. (Tas. : 1859 - 1865) Sat 2 Apr 1864 Page 1 ALLEGED MURDER. ALLEGED MURDER. It will be seen by our Police report that a man named King is in custody on suspicion of murdering Mary Devereaux, with whom he was living in concubinage. It appears that King, a well-known individual from the circumstance of his having had his two legs amputated, and who kept a barber's shop between the Old Bell and Stone's public house in Elizabeth-street, was apprehended on Thursday morning, about half-past twelve o'clock, for disturbing the peace, and on that day he was charged at the Police Court, and fined for the offence. While he was in custody, circumstances came to the knowledge of the police which induced a visit to the man's place where the woman Devereaux was found in a state of insensibility lying on the floor in the room behind the shop. The woman was conveyed to the General Hospital, and the prisoner was charged with assaulting her with intent ; but as she died in a short time, the charge became one of murder.
