Mathew Devine was born around 1805/1806 in Dublin, Ireland, to James Devine and Jane Leadbeater. He was tried in Dublin on July 16, 1826, and sentenced to seven years for stealing money, with two prior convictions. His name appears as either Mathew or Matthew, and his surname as Devine or Divine. In 1826, he was a shoemaker's apprentice and was transported to New South Wales on the ship 'Phoenix III', departing Dublin on August 27, 1826, and arriving in Sydney on Christmas Day. In the 1828 New South Wales Census, Mathew Divine was listed with Town Gang 24 in Windsor. He received a Ticket of Leave in 1831, permitting him to remain in the Merton District (Jerrys Plains), and obtained a Certificate of Freedom in 1834. Mathew worked at Glendon Station and married Deborah Lennard on October 16, 1837. They had fourteen children together: 1. Jane (Devine) Ryan 2. Mary Ann Matilda (Devine) Edler 3. Eliza Devine 4. He was a farmer and passed away on January 5, 1889, in Coulston.
