RECORDER'S COURT— Friday, April 14. Aldermen M'Kenny and Drury Jones on the Bench. ... Patrick Devine was indicted for stealing, on the evening the 25th of March last, 6£ from the person John Tally, person John Tally, a soldier of Regiment. The prosecutor gave his evidence in very clear manner ; had met the prisoner and four or five of his associates in Barrack street; they were strangers him, but out of pure friendship they persuaded him to go into two public-houses to drink ; while in the last, the house of M'Guire, a publican in Barrack street, they forcibly robbed him of what money had about him; on applying to the landlord for assistance, he took the soldier and pushed him out into the street, hereby giving some of the party an opportunity to escape. With the assistance of the watch, Tully secured two of them; Devine was apprehended same days afterwards. McGuire, the publican, was produced for the prisoner; but it evidently appeared that his house a rendezvous for this gang. The jury returned verdict guilty, and the prisoner, who, though quite a lad, was an old offender, was sentenced to seven years’ transportation. On leaving the bar, he was inclined to be very intemperate, and said he would be back in time enough. Dublin Morning Register, 17 April 1826
