Somerset Assizes concluded on Monday evening: the following are the sentences the prisoners: DEATH. Chas. Dix, for burglary; Bath Chronicle, 11 April 1822.




Charles Dix was listed as 21 years old on arrival in VDL. Previous offences: Imprisoned one month for an assault at Gloster. Surgeons Report: A quiet man. Charles was 5'8" tall, light brown hair, blue eyes. Marital status: P. (parents??) at Whitcombe. 28/11/1826: Conditional Emancipation. 17/1/1829 The Hobart Courier: 7/1/1829 Criminal Court Launceston: 10/1/1829: Charles Beard and Clharles Dix, charged with stealing 4 bushels of wheat, the property of John Bayles. Beard guilty - Dix not guilty. 20/11/1829: CP (Newspaper date). 26/3/1831 The Hobart Town Courier: Found not guilty for stealing a turkey from Mrs. Childers of New Norfolk. 24/12/1832: Married Mary Ann Browning, by Banns at New Norfolk, Tas. 16/10/1835: Carriers License - Charles Dix, Hamilton. 14/10/1836 The Tasmanian, Hobart Town: Charles Dix and Tomas English, charged with stealing sheep, the former was found guilty, and the latter acquitted. 18/10/1836 Colonial Times, Hobart: Charlex Dix and William English were charged with receiving the carcases of five sheep, stolen from Mr. Andrew Downie, at Macquarie Plains. 29/10/1836 Bent's News and Tasmanian Three=Penny Register, Hobart: Charles Dix, feloniously receiving - Fourteen years. 7/7/1837 The Hobart Town Courier: POLICE OFFICE, HAMILTON. July 3, 1837. WHEREAS divers articles late the property of Charles Dix, a convicted felon, are now in the possession of the undersigned - notice is hereby given that the said articles will be sold by me on Saturday the 24th instant, at the police office, Hamilton at 12 o'clock, viz.- 1 cart - 3 yokes - 6 bows ; a quantity of sawed timber, shingles, carpenter's tools, &c. JOSEPH CAHILL, District Constable. 28/10/1842: TOL 28/10/1845: Recommended for a CP 31/10/1846: CP Approved. 1849: There is a death listed for a Charles Dix in 1849 in the district of Adelaide.




he married Mary Ann Browning in VDL and their son Charles Dix grew up and lived a long life as Charles Dickes Haynes in South Australia. Mary Ann Dix, nee Browning travelled 1837 to South Australia as the wife of John Thomas Haynes on the Lady Emma and without confirmation, I understand that Charles Dix ended up in Port Adelaide too.
