Convict Notes
The Mary departed Calcutta 17th March and arrived Port Jackson on 4th June 1836, bringing 14,000 bushels of wheat and fifteen prisoners of the Crown. The convicts had all formerly been soldiers and most were originally from Ireland although Walter Boyce and John Elliott were from England. Private John Donnelly, no. 526 of 31st regiment. convicted at Kurnaul, disgraceful conduct, 7 years, never before convicted, neither read nor write, single, 28 yrs, 5'10'', fair, black, good. Comment from the gaoler in Calcutta, March 1836: "This man requires to be well looked after. I punished him for bad conduct in the jail and I believe him to be the worst of the whole batch."
