Convict Notes
Sarah Jane Pendergast did not live with Daniel Donnelly again after he was removed back to Sydney in April 1822. She already had a child born 1821, Bridget, fathered by convict Patrick Tunney at the time she married Donnelly. After Donnelly was imprisoned again, she returned to Tunney at some point as she bore Tunney a second daughter, Catherine, in 1824. However by 1826 Sarah Pendergast was with a third husband, John Lynch, as she bore him a daughter named Mary Lynch on 11 October 1826. Baptised at Parramatta in December 1826 and registered with St Mary's RC records. Sarah stayed with John Lynch and had 11 children to him altogether however they could not marry because of her short marriage to Daniel Donnelly. She was only free to marry after the 1836 death of Donnelly.
25 April 1820 listed asin Sydney Gaol Entrance Book as being discharged to the Gaol Gang 20 Nov 1822 - On list of prisoners from the Sydney Prisoners Barracks to be assigned to country areas; he was to be assigned to the Evan district. Probably assigned to john McHenry of Penrith as he is listed there in 1825 Census. 1 March 1833 had a Ticket of Leave No 33/44 to remain in the Port Macquarie area. Noted that he had lost his left leg; native of County Meath. Birth year entered of 1796 differs from his stated 25 year age on arrival in 1815 - which would have him born about 1790. Convict Death Register records him dying at Port Macquarie on 9 May 1836. The Ticket of LEave also records this along the side of the document
Daniel Donnelly was convicted at Meath in August 1814 and given a Life Sentence. He left on the Canada (3) in 1815, arriving in August 1815. The Ship Muster stated he was 25 years old. On 24th March 1822 he married Sarah Jane Pendergast who was a resident of Cornwallis, where her parents John Pendergast (per Minerva in 1800) and Jane Williams lived. The marriage was registered at St Mary's Catholic chapel. Probably performed at Windsor. He claimed that he had Come Free and was a resident of Trim, in Co Meath. Unfortunately for Sarah she should have waited for just one month as in April he was ordered back to Sydney by the Colonial Secretary and his certificate was to be returned. He was put back into the Prisoners Barracks.
