Kerry Evening Post 1813-1917, Saturday, April 09, 1831, p2 The following convictions took place at the Killarney April Sessions, which terminated this day: Honora Doody, Larceny of wearing apparel, to be transported seven years. (transported on Hooghley, 1831). Honora Doody, Arrived at Sydney on the convict ship Hooghley, Ship No. (3), on 27 September 1831. Aged 40; could read (not write); Protestant; Widow; with 3 female children. Native place (born at) Kerry. Trade or Calling: All work (servant). Offence: House robbery, Tried at Kerry, April 1831, Sentence: 7 years. Previous convictions: 7 years. Remarks: Served 4.5 years in Penitentiary. Height: 5 feet 2 inches; ruddy complexion, blue eyes, light brown hair; no marks or scars. In NSW: Honora Doody was about 40 years of age, and now a single woman in NSW. She could have gone into the convict system to be assigned as government labour, or she could marry and be assigned to her new husband. She chose the latter. Somewhere in the three months between arriving in NSW at the end of September 1831, and the end of that same year, William DEWART, formerly a convict but now free by servitude. formally applied for permission to marry Honora DOWDY; whose current Status was Bond, Aged 40 years, arrived per ship Hooghley (3) with a 7 year sentence. Dewart was aged 51 years and had originally arrived as a convict on ‘Almorah’ (2). Application for Permission to Marry William Dewart; Age: 51 years; Arrived per ship: Almorah (2); Current Status: Free (Trial Sentence: 7 years); Proposed wife: Honora DOWDY; Age: 40 years; Arrived per ship Hooghley (3); Trial Sentence: 7 years; Current Status: Bond; Application year: 1831; Clergyman: Cowper; Event Place: Sydney On 3 February 1840, Honorah Doody received her Certificate of Freedom, Licence Number: 40/0257. Her certificate stated that she had a “long visage” (face), and that she was born in Kerry, Ireland, in 1781 although this date would make her ten years older than the forty years she claimed to be on arrival in NSW, and would mean she was actually fifty years old on arrival. She was recorded as the wife of William Dewart when she received her certificate.
