Margaret Doogan, who was indicted together with a man named Neil Brogan, for having burned a cow house, the property of James O’Brien at Labinsy, on the 25th April, was then put to the bar, It appeared that Neil Brogan, who was charged with her, died since his committal  to gaol for the offence. Johanna O'Brien deposed that she went to look after the cows on the night in question, when she saw the prisoner and Neil Brogan together, putting fire into the thatch of the cow-house, which was consumed. This witness was cross-examined by Mr. Hynes, as attorney for the prisoner, with a view to prove that the prosecutors were instigated by motives of revenge, as the prisoner claimed some land in their possession, and which was formerly in the occupation of the prisoner. James Ryan deposed that he was called by Johanna O'Brien to assist to put out the fire, and that he saw the Prisoner and Brogan  leaving the house, and overheard them “it is blazed enough now.” Mr Hynes cross-examined the witness, to show that the prisoner assisted to extinguish the fire, and elicited from the witness farther, that & woman named Beeky, who had since gone to America, had confessed that she had set fire to the house, The witnesses for the prosecution were recalled, and persisted that there was not any person near the house except the prisoner and Brogan. Verdict—Guilty.   Saunder’s News-Letter, 9 July 1849.
