Convict Notes

Convict indents describe James as illiterate, Roman Catholic, 5'6 1/2 inches tall, had a dark ruddy complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, and had a lot of scars. Once in Australia it is most likely that James was assigned to the Goulburn district, as that is where his Ticket of Leave was issued. He obtained his Certificate of Freedom on 24 March 1840.

James was married with 2 male 2 female children at the time of his transportation. It is more than likely that he stole the sheep in order to feed his family. One of James' sons, Michael Doolan, would later immigrate to Australia with his own family, settling in Victoria.
