Much of the following information comes from the research of Barry Files, a gt gt grandson of Eliza. 1852 - Abel Ovans, age 22, together with his girl-friend Eliza Dore: were both charged with the murder of Eliza's illegitimate child in a Mill Pond at Newport on 15th January 1852. They were both found guilty and received the Death sentence. Eliza Dore was reprieved and later transported to the colonies but Abel Ovans was executed on 16th April 1852 and his body was buried within the precincts of the gaol. The Millbank prison records list Eliza as Register No. 4526. Aged 22. Single. Read and write imperfectly. Servant. Convicted 24 March 1852, Monmouth. Wilful Murder. Convict Indent: TRADE Dairymaid HEIGHT 5 feet 1 inch AGE 22 COMPLEXION Fair HEAD Large HAIR Light WHISKERS VISAGE Long FOREHEAD High EYEBROWS Dark EYES Dark Blue NOSE Roman MOUTH Wide CHIN Large BODY MARKS None SURGEON REPORT Good RELIGION Protestant LITERACY Reads and Writes MARITAL STATUS Single NATIVE PLACE Wiltshire 28/4/1853: Assigned to David Stenhouse, Battery Point as a domestic servant. 16/5/1854: Married George Files, 25, a Sailor, Eliza 23, a widow, at St. Georges, Hobart. Children: 8/9/1854: John 22//1856: George 1857: Stillborn child. 12/2/1859: Richard 6/3/1860: Sarah Eliza 1861: Thomas d 24/1/1863 1862: William James 1863: Esther 29/4/1865: Robert Hobart Aug. 1866: Mary 1868: Thomas - died at 2 months. 1870: Alfred 1872: Charles Tasman 1873: Ernest William. Only 5 survived into adulthood. 15/7/1875: Eliza died from cancer, aged 47, buried at Cornelian Bay Cemetery. George Files died in Melbourne in 1902. George was knocked down by a horse and cart on the corner of Bourke and Exhibition streets on the 7th of September. He died of three broken ribs and more extensive internal injuries on the 9/9/1902. He was 79.




Conduct Record: Tried 24 March 1852, Trade Dairymaid, aged 22, Transported for Wilful Murder (Stated this offence Murdering my own child by throwing it into the canal at Newport lived 10 mths with Able Ovens who assisted in the offence he was hanged), Single, Conditional Pardon approved 8 September 1863
