Julia Dowd, a pert little minx, who had been assigned just three days, was charged with having broke out already. The previous day she bolted into her mistress' parlour and commenced shouting, "I say ma'am, I want some aprons, come hand them out quick, I'm in such a bustle." The mistress declined doing anything of the kind, when Julia threw up her pug with the most contemptuous scorn, like a pig would to windward, and commenced displacing the furniture and kicking it about in all directions. This was considered contumacious, and she was handed over to the Police. When before the Bench she expressed no contrition, but appeared to think that her conduct had been quite the thing, in consequence, the Bench gave her a pass to the Factory for two months. Sydney Gazette, 23 Mar 1837.

Judith Dowd also appeared to use the name Julia Dowd, which is used in thenewspaprer for her ticket of leave announcement. Principal Superintendent of Convicts' Office. 1st July, 1839. LIST of Female Convicts who have obtained Tickets-of-leave since the last day of publication :- LIVERPOOL Dowd Julia, Southworth 2 Sydney Gazette, 9 July 1839. ------------------------------------------------ She gained her ticket of leave much later than her fellow prisoners. The following may exlain this delay in being granted this indulgence. A woman named Julia Dowd was brought before the Bench yesterday, charged with repeated neglect and insolence. The prisoner on every occasion told her mistress that she would not work, she did not like work, and wanted to go back to the Factory where she could live easy. When sentenced to two months to the third class factory, the prisoner addressing her mistress said, "bad luck to you, you --------."
